ARLINGTON-- The heavily favored Stephenville Yellow Jackets (10-2) left no doubt on Thursday night they'd be a contender for the state title as they rolled past the Trophy Club Nelson Bobcats (7-5) 42-14 in front of approximately 8,000 fans at Cowboys Stadium.
Stephenville jumped out to a 28-0 lead less than three minutes into the third quarter and cruised the remainder of the evening as their offense looked as sharp as it did in last week's 49-23 win over Everman. The 'Jackets took the opening kickoff and marched 75 yards for the game's opening score as Witt Westbrook scored on a three yard run for a 7-0 lead.
On the ensuing possession the 'Jackets would take a 14-0 lead on a 28 yard interception return by Braden Coverdale, it's the second week in a row the Stephenville DB has returned an interception for a score as he did the same last week against Everman.
After a TC Nelson punt, Stephenville made it 21-0 as Brice Gunter hauled in an 18 yard touchdown pass from Tyler Jones as the game was still in the first quarter. Early in the second quarter Stephenville RB and Baylor verbal Aiavion Edwards got in the mix as it was his first game back from a broken foot suffered in Week 3 of the season. Edwards would haul in a 16 yard touchdown pass from Jones to up the lead to 28-0, on the night Edwards finished with 65 yards rushing on nine carries and the one catch for sixteen yards.
Nelson would get on the board with 1:17 remaining in the first half as senior WR Dezmon Gassaway hauled in a 25 yard touchdown pass from Andrew Mitchell to cut the lead to 28-7. Stephenville would answer quickly as junior Prestin Brown would return the ensuing kickoff 99 yards to paydirt for a 35-7 SHS lead at the half.
The second half proved to be extremely sloppy as Stephenville with the game well in hand worked in several backups. Stephenville would go up 42-7 as Jones tossed his fourth touchdown pass of the night a 38 yard strike to Alex Sanchez. Trophy Club Nelson would finish off the scoring in the fourth quarter on an eleven yard touchdown pass from Mitchell to Chad Loving.
Stephenville advances to the 4A Division II Region I Semi-Finals where they will take on the winner of tomorrow's game between Lake Dallas and El Paso Burges.
