Gotcher to visit Texas Tech next week
Garland (Texas) Lakeview Centennial shooting guard Toddrick Gotcher will be in Lubbock next week to see the Red Raiders take on the Longhorns at Jones AT&T Stadium. The 2011 prospect visited Lubbock last year for a basketball game, and he's excited to see what Tech has to offer on the football side of things.
"I made a trip up there last year and watched a basketball game. It was a lot of fun and the fans were crazy. It was a great atmosphere," Gotcher said. "Being from Texas, I know they get even crazier for football, so I'm excited to go check them out when they play one of their biggest rivals."
The environment is what often lures recruits to visit a program, but Gotcher also wants to take a look at the total package that Tech has to offer. That includes educational opportunities, as well as the city itself.
"I'm wanting to meet the chancellor again and the athletic director. I also want to take a closer look at the education part of it and meet the people on that side of things," he said. "I'm just trying to get a better feel for what Lubbock is like, and Texas Tech is like. That includes seeing the campus, surrounding areas, and just being a part of a gameday there. I expect a packed house because they're playing Texas, and I expect it to be pretty wild."
The 6-foot-3, 185-pounder's relationship with the coaching staff in Lubbock is not a new one, and the time spent on it to this point has provided Gotcher with a unique perspective on the direction of the program.
"I've been talking with Coach Chris Beard and Coach Pat Knight. They're good guys. We've got a good relationship," he said. "They've been recruiting me since my freshman year. They've been straight-up with me the entire time. We've really had a long time to build a relationship over the past few years, so we've got a great one now."
"I've been able to see how they've built that program and kind of changed the direction it's headed in since Coach Knight took over. They've improved a lot since the beginning for sure. I've liked what they've had to say so far, and I've also liked what I've seen on the floor from them too."
Gotcher will be visiting San Diego the week after he's in Lubbock. Right now he's still fairly open, but he does have a top 5 that he's narrowed it down to. "My top 5 would be Texas Tech, USC, San Diego, West Virginia, and Baylor. I'm still considering everything those schools have got to offer. I will say that Texas Tech is in good shape with me right now, but it might be a little while until I make a decision."
Aside from the Red Raiders, Gotcher holds offers from Auburn, Baylor, the Citadel, Drake, Houston, NC Wilmington, North Texas, Penn, San Diego, San Jose State, SMU, Tulane, and UTEP.
