Byrd gets coveted invite to NIKE Global Challenge
LAS VEGAS - Getting one of 30 coveted invitations to the play for Team USA at the NIKE Global Challenge has been one of the highest priorities Russell Byrd has had during his summer.
When he hyper-extended his knee on the first day of the Lebron James Skill Academy at the beginning of the month, Byrd felt that his chances of making the team, which features three teams of 10 players representing the Midwest, The East and the Western part of the United States in competition against some of the world's top young basketball talent, had been severely diminished.
But Byrd's overall performance in each of the three individual camps he played at during June and July made a strong impression on the experts who determine the 30 players who will play for their country and the Michigan State commitment was recently informed that he would have the opportunity to play for his country at Liberty High School in Hillsborough, Oregon on August 7-9.
