Mason-Griffin takes in Memphis, Texas next
Tommy Mason-Griffin is one of the top point guard prospects in the 2009 class. The 5-9, 190-pound floor general recently announced that he would be leaving Houston Madison to play at Oak Hill Prep in Virginia for his senior year. With the school change announcement out of the way, the Houston area star began to focus on his recruitment and recently took an unofficial visit to Memphis, with a visit to Texas likely to be scheduled by summers end.
"I went up to Memphis about a week and a half ago for their Elite camp," Mason-Griffin said. "I thought it was going to be more of skill work and instruction, but it was some skill work and running the Memphis offense. I think I fit in their system,"
With one unofficial visit out of the way, the strong and explosive point guard said he hopes to take a trip to check out a Big 12 school or two.
"I'm hoping to take a couple more visits this summer. If I do, it will probably be to Texas and Baylor," Mason-Griffin said.
The No.77 prospect in the 2009 class says nothing has changed on his school list and he doesn't have a favorite.
"My list is still the same. It's Texas, Memphis, Oklahoma, Baylor, Oklahoma State and A&M. I'm really still at the same point and don't have a favorite," Mason-Griffin said.
While a decision isn't expected for a while from the Houston area star, the next Oak Hill point guard has a very good idea of what will be his deciding factors and how certain teams fit his style of play.
"I definitely have some deciding factors. They are the depth charts, style of play and can I come in and make an impact.
Looking at last season and how teams played, I think I fit the style of play with Memphis, Texas and Baylor the most. Some teams are telling me they are going to change their style of play this year, so that is something I'll be watching. I'll probably make a decision in the fall," Mason-Griffin said.
Mason-Griffin, who will be departing for the Steve Nash skills academy on Wednesday, spent his time in Houston in the gym working out with many players under John Lucas. Aside from the intense daily workouts, the sharp shooter is working to lose weight and increase quickness.
"I'm working on getting faster and quicker. I'm also slimming down. I played at around 195-pounds last year and I weigh 190 right now." Mason-Griffin said.
