Russell still planning an Iowa visit?
Fresh off his ranking in the latest Rivals Top 150, Nick Russell has started to get plenty of attention from various college programs around the country. This past weekend the Texas native was in North Carolina for an AAU event and got a closer look at Duke, but he plans to use the next month to look at several other campuses. Will he still be making his visit to Iowa's Elite Camp in June?
"I'd say chances are 90% that I will be visiting Iowa," said the four star point guard from Arlington, Texas.
Russell says that he will be attending several camps closer to home at Texas A&M, Baylor, and Texas, with a trip to Oklahoma also being possible.
One of the reasons that Russell would like to make those campus visits for camps is to get a better feel for what the schools have to offer.
"Right now I have a real good relationship with the coaches at Iowa and I just want to get out there and check things out," Russell said. "It is important to get out and see the schools before I make my decision, but I am not in any rush to make a decision at this point."
This past season, Russell averaged 23 points, six assists, and five rebounds a game at Grace Prep, but this spring has been his coming out party, so to speak, landing him in the most recent Rivals Top 150 rankings at #88.
"Honestly, I was sort of shocked and surprised by the ranking, but it was nice," he said.
This past weekend, Russell and his AAU team, the Dallas Mustangs, played in the prestigious Tournament of Champions in North Carolina, where he fared well, but unfortunately, his team didn't perform very well. The trip did offer him an opportunity to get a closer look at a program he has admired for a long time, Duke.
"I guess you could say they are sort of my dream school," Russell said of Duke, who has not offered. " I have been watching them for a long time and I sort of grew up liking them."
