Boilermakers offer AAU teammates
Through the first portion of the July evaluation period, Purdue coaches followed David Hamilton's SYF Rising Stars 16-and-under team everywhere it went.
Whether Hamilton's team was playing at the Hoosier Shootout or Best of the Midwest in Indianapolis, or the Kentucky HoopFest in Louisville, a Boilermaker coach - sometimes coaches - was courtside.
Apparently, Matt Painter and his staff liked what they saw from at least two of the team's rising juniors, as Indianapolis Cathedral wing Kelsey Barlow and Tipton forward Derek Elston were offered scholarships on Monday, as Purdue sent out a wave of 2009 offers which also included North Montgomery's D.J. Byrd.
The 6-foot-7 Elston's offer might have been expected, as he'd received suggestions from the Boilermaker staff one might be forthcoming. And, Elston's not exactly an unknown commodity anymore, considering Indiana offered him a scholarship on the spot, in person, at its camp a few weeks ago.
