Hoops: U-M watching Toledo guard
The spring/summer AAU season is an ideal time for under the radar basketball recruits to emerge, and this year has been no exception. Michigan head coach John Beilein has hit the recruiting trail hard in search of both top flight recruits and hidden gems, and he might have identified one a few weeks back
In Toledo (Ohio) Whitmer guard Ryne Smith, a shooter who caught everyone's attention with a 38-point game at the adidas Takes 5ive tournament in Cincinnati in early July. Smith continued his hot shooting through much of the tournament, slowing down a bit in later games, enough to warrant attention from mid-major plus, even a few high majors.
So far, so good. Smith's play has earned offers from several MAC schools, UMass, Utah, Bradley and others, while warranting phone calls from Minnesota's Tubby Smith and other Big Ten coaches. Several high majors have informed Smith he'd state his case for an offer with a showing similar to the one at Takes 5ive.
