adidas Take 5ive Classic Recap Part 1
The entire BearcatLair.com crew was in attendance this weekend at the University of Cincinnati's Fifth Third Arena for the inaugural Adidas Take 5ive Classic. 2008 Bearcat commitment Yancy Gates was on hand for Saturday's action (including an 8 AM tilt with the Atlanta Celtics) despite getting in late the night before from Italy where he was competing with a 19U team.
Fighting jet lag and exhaustion Gates spent the first few minutes of the early game stretching and loosening up with B.J. Mullens before both checked into the game which waged two super talented frontcourt duos against one another. Mullens was matched up with super sophomore Derrick Favors and Gates matched up with UC target Chris Singleton.
Gates struggled early on after hitting a quick bucket. He drifted to the three-point line and attempted several but was short on all of his attempts.
In the second half with the fate of the game still hanging in the balance Gates put on a mini-display of his vast array of skills. In one sequence he got ball deep in the paint faked toward the middle and instead went baseline and scored over the outstretched arms of a defender. He also dropped in an alley off a baseline inbound and threw down a ferocious jam in the sequence.
The Celtic guards took over with roughly six minutes to play and OBC finished pool play 0-3 with Gates playing in only one of the team's two games. Even with Gates OBC was in the Super Pool with Pump N' Run (CA), Atlanta Celtics and Indiana Elite.
Game 2 was a different story as OBC was matched up with the Ohio Gators and the outcome was never in doubt. Gates went to work early scoring on a quick post move, getting to the foul line and throwing down a variety of dunks. Gates also had several nice blocks and he did a much better job of staying inside instead of drifting to the perimeter.
