With just one scholarship to give right now, Thad Matta and the Ohio State basketball program can be very selective in the 2012 recruiting cycle. Matta and company have targeted a few of the nation's premier forwards and centers, including Philadelphia (Pa.) Friends Central product Amile Jefferson. The 6-foot-7 combo forward is the No. 36 ranked player in the nation by Rivals.com and he's hoping to visit Columbus in the very near future.
"My Father is handling (setting up official visits)," Jefferson explained. "Hopefully we can work out all of the details soon. I will be visiting Ohio State for sure, hopefully in the next few weeks."
Jefferson is weighing offers from the likes of Ohio State, Miami (FL), North Carolina State, Syracuse, Temple, Villanova, Wake Forest, and Virginia, among others. For now, Jefferson says that none of the schools have separated from the rest of the pack.
"I don't have a list at this point," he said. "Hopefully I can sit down with my Mother and Father soon and we can work on that."
Still, Jefferson says his interest level in Ohio State is high.
"I'm definitely interested in Ohio State," he said. "It's a great school and a great program both athletically and academically so I'm definitely interested in them. The coaching staff is great, I just talked to coach (Thad) Matta on the phone so it's been great."
One of the biggest reasons that Ohio State continues to sit in solid position for Jefferson is the relationship he has been building with Matta.
"Coach Matta is a great guy, a brilliant guy," Jefferson said. "Talking to him, I just love talking to people with that amount of knowledge especially since I have so much to learn. He's a great coach, every chance we get to talk is always good and special to me."
Another factor helping the Buckeyes' chances is Jefferson's relationship with incoming freshman LaQuinton Ross.
"LaQuinton Ross is a good friend of mine," Jefferson explained. "I've known him for a while, first from playing at the Adidas Nations (AAU Event) he was playing on the older team when I played. Then he went to Life Center (Nj.) and we played them last year so I've just got to know him from AAU and high school and stuff."
At the moment, Jefferson says he doesn't have any real time table for a decision.
"Right now I'm just trying to take care of (scheduling official visits)," he said. "I'm just trying to get a better look at all of the schools so I can start to do things like narrowing my list and figuring out where I want to be."
