Larson discusses opening up his recruiting
Cody Larson committed to play basketball at the University of Iowa in the fall of 2008. On Friday morning, he made a tough decision that he didn't take lightly. After meeting last evening with new Iowa Head Coach Fran McCaffery, the 6-foot-9 power forward from Sioux Falls, SD has decided to open up his recruitment once again.
"It was a tough decision because I love Iowa and I love the program," Larson said. "When you bring a new coach in that you haven't been recruited by it is tough to stay with the program. What I wanted to do was have the opportunity to open things up. I talked to Coach McCaffery and he agreed to it and he is going to keep recruiting me."
Larson signed his national letter of intent this past November and in order for him to speak with other schools, he would have to receive a release from his scholarship to Iowa, which he did on Friday afternoon.
This month has been a tough one for Larson and the three other Iowa commits who signed letters of intent in November. They experienced the firing of the coach that they committed to and then the hiring of a coach that most of them had never been in contact with.
"I was committed to Coach Lickliter and I loved Coach Lickliter and his staff. It has been basically two years that I have been committed and other coaches have seen me play, it will be interesting to see where I stand with them." Larson said.
On Thursday evening, Larson and his family met in person with Coach McCaffery for the first time. While the new Hawkeye head coach gave a good sales pitch, Larson spoke with the family afterwards and felt it was best to at least look around and see what is out there.
"I've spent a lot of time thinking about this in the past few weeks, talking to my family and my coach," he said. "Even after Coach McCaffery left last night, I wanted to talk to my family one more time and make sure that I was making the right decision. I do love Iowa and the program, but I just have to make sure that I am making the right decision."
With the spring signing period about to get underway next week, many recruits will be feeling rushed to find a school to call home. Larson says he is going to take his time and find the right fit.
"I am going to take all the time that I need. The reason I got my release was to make the right decision, so I am not going to make a quick decision to any school. I think that would be hypocritical of me to rush into another decision after getting my release. In the end, it could be Iowa again."
Larson said that Coach McCaffery has invited him to come to Iowa City next week for Iowa's Spring Football game. He is unsure if he will make the trip next week, but he plans to make a return trip to the Iowa campus before making his final decision.
